Location and Getting Here
In the center of Puerto Viejo
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Limón (there is also another Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica named Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui so don't get on the wrong bus!) is located on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica not far from the Panama border.
We're in the center where you will be able to walk easily to beaches (Playa el Chino or Playa Negra), restaurants, bars, stores and much more as we're located on a quiet street right near the center of Puerto Viejo. The beaches of Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo are close by too, easily reached by bicycle or car. Cahuita National Park and the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge are close by too, best reached by car, bus or let us book a tour for you. See our location on the Puerto Viejo Satellite Map.
Driving Here
If you'd like to drive to Puerto Viejo, the route is fairly easy once you're out of the confusion of San Jose and the road is in good condition and paved until the last 5 miles or so into town. A 4WD vehicle is not needed to get down here but you may want one once you're here to explore more.
We are an authorized rental car agent for Poas Rent-a-Car so let us know if we can set you up with a rental car from either San José or here in Puerto Viejo. One way rentals are also available.

Bus and Shared Shuttle
There are 6 express buses to Puerto Viejo daily from San José and Cabinas Los Almendros is located just 2 minutes walking from the bus stop. Schedule and detailed info here.
Tourist shuttles will take you directly to our door from most hotels in San José, Arenal, Bocas del Toro or other locations in Costa Rica. They are a schedule service and you must book them in advance. Try the transport planner to find your route and schedule.
We can also arrange a private vehicle and driver if the bus or shuttle schedules don't work for you or you just want a little luxury!
And it is now possible to fly from San José to Limón where a shuttle will meet you for the 45 minute drive to Cabinas Los Almendros. Flight and connecting shuttle must be booked in advance.
Getting Around in the Area
Once you're here, it's pretty much flat. So a great way to get around is to rent a bicycle. Lots of places in town rent them for a few bucks a day. Ask us at the office to recommend a place.
There is some local bus service between Puerto Viejo and the smaller communities southeast of Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo. And there's a little more back in the direction of Cahuita to the northwest.
Taxis are also available.
